Many dry bulk cargoes demand pristine holds without any residue contamination. Such residues can damage both subsequent cargoes and painted surfaces, leading to increased corrosion risks.

Today’s voyages and time charters increasingly replace traditional liner trades, driving the need for higher flexibility and more frequent and thorough cleaning practices.

Previously, conventional bulk carrier cleaning involved sweeping holds, washing with fire hoses or portable units, and sometimes using compressed air. This had to be done after discharge and before loading the next cargo, often becoming impossible during bad weather.

Modern hold cleaning with Scanjet machines provides economical and efficient solutions tailored to fit the ship’s structure. Bulk carriers frequently switch cargoes quickly, where time savings from efficient cleaning can offset installation costs. Sea water is used for washing, followed by fresh water rinses to reduce corrosion and prevent salt contamination.
