The Type FA flame arrester is ideally suited for end-of-line installation at mast riser outlets in high-capacity applications. It is particularly well suited to handling a wide range of cargoes, as the gas outlet area can be adjusted to suit operational requirements. This helps prevent oil mist formation above deck, which can occur due to excessive gas velocity or compression effects.
Designed for minimal pressure drop, the Type FA is optimised for high-throughput systems such as oil tankers equipped with traditional common venting arrangements. The unit is fitted with effective drainage ports that can be connected to recovery or collection systems.
The flame screen assembly is easily removable, allowing for straightforward inspection and cleaning as required, depending largely on the quality of the inert gas system.
Type FA is fully approved for use on inerted vessels and for Group IIA gases. In typical installations, high-capacity flame screens are used in combination with full-sized high-velocity vents on each tank, ensuring safe operation independent of crew routines through individual tank venting. The flame screen is not intended to manage thermal expansion or sloshing pressures, but solely to provide flame protection at the outlet.
Correct sizing is essential. A careful pressure drop calculation in accordance with IMO MSC/Circ.731 must be carried out to ensure that pressure/vacuum valves do not operate prematurely or lead to excessive vapour losses.
