The Scanvent high-velocity valve stands in a class of its own when it comes to reduction of VOC emission, delivering performance that is widely regarded as second to none in the industry. Its outstanding efficiency is driven by a patented secondary nozzle system specifically developed reduce vapour that would otherwise be lost during normal tank breathing due to valve blow-down (difference between opening and closing setting).
At the heart of the design is the Scanvent valves unique dual-nozzle technology. While the primary system manages pressure control during loading, the patented secondary nozzle is the real breakthrough for VOC savings. It ensures that vapours emitted during voyage due to thermal variations are retained and safely managed, rather than being released to atmosphere. This makes a measurable difference in reducing overall VOC emissions during voyage.
The valve also incorporates a carefully engineered combination of magnetic force and air braking, delivering completely stable, non-oscillating operation. It is fully compliant with ISO 15364:2021, including the requirement for no metal-to-metal contact within a two-second timeframe.
Under normal operating conditions, the system prevents any unnecessary release of tank vapour. Only when the set pressure is exceeded will controlled venting occur, and even then strictly limited to surplus pressure. In emergency situations, the primary full-capacity function ensures rapid and safe pressure relief.
Industry estimates from INTERTANKO and others suggest VOC losses on crude carriers can reach around 0.25% of total cargo. With the Scanvent system, these losses are reduced to virtually zero in practical operation—largely thanks to the effectiveness of the secondary nozzle technology.
The valve features a dual-disc arrangement, with a smaller weight-loaded disc handling thermal fluctuations during voyage, and a full-flow valve designed for loading operations and other high-demand conditions.
The valve is well suited to future IMO regulations requiring higher tank pressures in order to reduce cargo boil-off – by maintain a constant high pressure in the cargo tank (no blow-down during voyage).
